Do you feel like discovering more of the world and travelling to the beautiful country of Peru?
Do you want to get to know the country, its culture and traditions, and its people in a different way and become active as a volunteer in one of Peru’s many assistance programs and projects?
Sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it?!
So why wouldn’t you go to the beautiful city of Ayacucho in the Peruvian Andes?
Ayacucho is a warm-hearted city, surrounded by mountains, and full of tradition. The city, though, has experienced its fair share of suffering during the destructive decade-long struggle between the revolutionary ‘The Shining Path’ movement, and the Peruvian army. Although safe, Ayacucho still suffers from extreme poverty, which has resulted in the founding of many assistance projects in the past decade. The projects, like the majority of Ayacucho’s inhabitants, lack sufficient financial support so they have a necessity for dedicated volunteers. It is still important, however, that the best possible fit between volunteers and the project is achieved (i.e. that volunteers go where they are needed the most and where they can give the best of themselves).

A bunch of us volunteers in Ayacucho have experienced that achieving the best fit is not always easy. That is precisely the reason why we took the initiative to make this website about volunteering in Ayacucho. There are a total of 16 projects described on the website, divided into 5 categories. We have done our best to describe what the projects are, the requirements volunteers have to fulfill, what volunteers can do in the various projects, and what the living conditions, costs, and benefits are for the volunteers. Actively and enthusiastically searching for a project that fits you best is the key to having a rewarding experience as a volunteer in Ayacucho.
Good luck!!

* On this site we use the word ‘Casa Hogar’ a lot. A Casa Hogar is a home where people can stay for a period of time to receive assistance and be taken care of. Such individuals are often children without parents, children whose parents cannot take care of them because of poverty, children who have suffered from domestic violence or have been neglected, and also people of age or others who need help because they are not able to tend to their own needs permanently or at a specific time of their lives.
